The monastery town of Rehna was founded in the middle of the 12th century by settlers from Rhena, Hesse. The Romanesque village church was mentioned in 1230 and in 1236 the monastery was founded. At the foundation, a certain Frater Ernestus, who probably came from Ratezburg, but no mention other than in connection with the foundation of the monastery in Rehna.

The city center and the monastery building were redeveloped in the context of urban development in the period from 1991 to 2005.

The monastery town of Rehna in the heart of northwest Mecklenburg is located on the Radegast river, picturesquely embedded in a gentle, hilly landscape. Rehna is also the northern gateway to the Schaalsee - Elbe biosphere reserve. Pilgrimage and hiking trails between the monasteries Rehna, Ratzeburg and Zarrentin lead through natural alluvial forests and wet meadows, past inviting lakes.
