Zhoushan Road has a central part in Jewish presence in Shanghai.
It is lined with western style houses built in the 1910s and 1920s. It became a center of Jewish life for the people that had fled Europe to Shanghai. During the Japanese occupation from 1941 to 1945 people of Jewish faith had been relocated to and restricted to this so called ‘Shanghai Ghetto’. In 1945 the area was hit during an American air raid on the the Bund area and killed and injured many. After the war many left China again.
Until recently it has been a bustling Shanghai neighborhood. As of Dec 2022 the entire area is undergoing redevelopment and the houses are currently vacant.
