The Schoonbeek forests are approximately 200 hectares in size and are located on the border with Genk and Diepenbeek. Until 1800, this was part of a large heath landscape that extended far to the north. The current straight road pattern can also be found on maps from 1840 and was already wooded then. For such afforestations, the heath was previously dug up entirely and raised beds were constructed in wetter areas to plant trees. When the mining industry emerged in Limburg around 1900, the heath in Schoonbeek was further 'reclaimed' and planted with pines, as you can still see today.
