Volcanic eruptions and frequent earthquakes have partially destroyed the sanctuaries with a total of 249 different structures. The significant structures have been rebuilt, while the reconstruction work on the smaller sanctuaries is still ongoing.
The entrance to the main temple is guarded on all four sides by two large Dwarapala statues.
