The nature and environment station has existed since 1984 and is the largest municipal facility for environmental education and environmental education in North Rhine-Westphalia. More than 35,000 young and old users experience the plants and animals up close every year in the seven-hectare nature teaching area, in the neighboring Gelpetal landscape protection area and in the station building, according to the motto: "Capture nature - nature to touch". The climate measuring station of the all-day grammar school Johannes Rau is located on the grounds of the station nature and environment on the basis of a cooperation. The climate measuring station accurately records a wide range of climatic values such as air and soil temperature, humidity and pressure, precipitation, wind speed and direction as well as climatological key days in the middle of the nature teaching area of the station. At the Nature and Environment station there is also a wind turbine on a 17 m sculpture. The station for nature and the environment offers, for example, forest play groups and holiday camps.
