Cairo, the capital of Egypt, is the largest city in the Middle East with over 10 million inhabitants. Cairo is known as the city of a thousand minarets and has some of the most fascinating Islamic buildings in the world, notably the Muhammad Ali and Al-Azhar Mosques. The other main attraction is Cairo's proximity to the ancient Egyptian cities of Giza and ruins of Memphis, so day trips from Cairo to the Great Pyramid of Giza and Sphinx as well as the even older Saqqara pyramids are popular. Other highlights and sights in Cairo include the Khan al-Khalili market, the 187-meter-high Cairo Tower, the tranquil Al-Azhar Park and the medieval citadel.
