Eleftherios Venizelos was a politician and prime minister in Greece. He is considered the greatest Greek politician of modern times. Under his leadership, Crete was united with Greece in 1913. As Prime Minister of Greece, he expanded the borders of the young state to its present extent in the Balkan Wars and as a result of the First World War. He introduced significant administrative reforms and negotiated the Treaty of Lausanne for Greece in 1923. Venizelos is still widely revered throughout the country today.
