This is number 1 of what was once a series of nine boundary stones. Some have disappeared, but this one remains.

"To settle a serious and persistent dispute between the municipalities of Aywailles and Theux, King Leopold I ordered this boundary marker. It consists of nine cylindrical stones placed in a straight line over a distance of 7.3 km. Number 1 is located 77 meters from this marker, upstream, on the right bank of a stream called the "Ruisseau des Mainires" ("the main stream"). Number 9 is on the "Fagne Brume," also next to a stream called "Le Chefna."

One of the nine original boundary stones (seven still exist) placed on a straight line between La Reid and Ville-au-Bois. Leopold I used this to resolve the long-standing border dispute between Aywaille and Theux in 1833.
