The Heid des Gattes is a mighty rock formation on the north bank of the Amel near Aywaille. Steep hiking trails lead up from the valley. From up here you can enjoy a unique view of Aywaille, neighboring Remouchamps, the Amel and the hills opposite.

Because it is unique in this place (the heid of the gattes) it is rare to meet them on this path.

The Heid des Gattes nature reserve is a magnificent reserve of around sixty hectares. It belongs to the municipality of Aywaille and is administered by the non-profit organization “Ardenne et Gaume”. A preserved subvertical rock wall dominates the right bank of the Amblève between Remouchamps and Aywaille. It is its exceptional flora which makes the international reputation of this beautiful cliff. Very rare plants but above all new plant associations grow on finely stratified limestone cement sandstone facing south.

The reserve also includes the neighboring quarries of Goiveux and Falize as well as an area of neighboring forests and bocages. Most of the interesting plant associations have colonized the quarries. A great diversity of amphibians breed in the pools at the foot of the wall. Many reptiles, including the Wall Lizard and the Smooth Coronella, frequent the scree. A large number of thermophilic insects, sometimes unusual, swarm in lawns and bask on rocky outcrops. More spectacular, the Peregrine Falcon and Great Horned Owl reign over the site.
