To preserve such a landscape, it must be managed, otherwise you soon get a forest, in our region the climax vegetation. For this, Natuurpunt uses a herd of Galloway cattle. This Scottish breed is self-reliant, gentle and not fussy. This makes them ideal nature managers. Because the cattle have plenty of space, they can choose their own food. And because one plant is a bit tastier than the other, some places will be eaten a bit more than others. This creates an alternation of briefly grazed grasslands and more rugged areas. A varied natural landscape also brings with it a rich plant and animal world.
However, it should be mentioned that despite their docile character, these animals are not tame and they cannot be compared to the cows we know from the farm. It is also important that the animals retain their self-reliance and do not become dependent on humans. It is therefore asked to leave the animals alone, not to walk towards them and not to feed them. It is also best to keep the dog on a leash. It is known that they can react strongly in groups when their rest is disturbed by eg wild animals or dogs.Source: bonheiden.be/mispeldonk
