Road cycling
Nine kilometers, 500 meters of elevation gain, is quite a workout. There's no bike path. Instead, the federal highway from Bad Harzburg to Torfhaus is four-lane—two up, two down. This gives cars and trucks plenty of room to maneuver while you work your way up the mountain. Once you arrive in Torfhaus, you can take a break and, if the weather's good, enjoy the view of the Brocken.

The descent from Torfhaus to Bad Harzburg, with a 10% gradient (feeling more like more), is a lot of fun. Your brakes have to be in good shape. Since the speed limit is only 60 km/h in some places, you have to be careful not to get caught by a speed camera. Photos taken at 60 km/h.
