Best Hikes to Schlitz Christmas Candle (Hinterturm)

Tips

  • Since 1991, the rear tower has been used as a Christmas candle in the Christmas season. This candle is also in the Guinness Book of Records.
The Hinterburg was first mentioned in 1493 and rebuilt from 1561 to 1565 as a three-storey building, rebuilt in 1647 and housed a retirement home of the Count Görtzischen Foundation in its main and auxiliary building, the Count's forest master's house, as well as in the Schachtenburg from 1950 to the end of 2015.[1] . In 2016, the building complex was sold to three private investors together with the Schachtenburg.[2] Since 2017, the Hinterburg building complex has housed a multi-generation facility.
The structure of the main building of the rear castle shows a pure Renaissance style with magnificent gables and a stair tower located in the middle on the long side with an octagonal half-timbered structure and a baroque slate-covered hood.
The rear tower is a 36 meter high keep with dungeons below, built in the 14th century, served as a guard room and was originally only accessible via a fold-up footbridge from the residential building of the rear castle built in 1553. Since the 17th century he wore a baroque slate hood and got a stone hood in 1906. Today the rear tower is a popular lookout tower that is only accessible by elevator.

  • The Schlitzer Christmas candle in the Hessian town of Schlitz is about 42 meters high and is the largest Christmas candle that is not made of wax.[1][2] It has been in the Guinness Book of Records since 1992.[3]Since 1991, the keep of the Hinterburg, the 36 meter high rear tower, has been wrapped in a red cloth every November and an approximately 6 meter high flame made of around 140 light bulbs is mounted on the top of the tower. With an elevator inside the tower you can get to the top of the candle and enjoy the view. On the market square of the historic old town, the Christmas market takes place on the Advent weekends, for which the candle serves as a special attraction.[2] (Source. Wikipedia)
