It was built in 1914 and is reminiscent of Lourdes, where in 1858 St. Mary, the "Immaculate Conception" of St. Bernadektus Soubirous appeared. Countless found Lourdes physical and above all mental healing, peace with God.
This Marian Grotto is a place of silence and contemplation for all visitors.

Mariengrotte
The replica of the Lourdes grotto (consecrated in 1915) was created in a former limestone quarry on the western edge of the Strangelsberg. The imposing complex overlooking the spa town in the valley between Altefeld and Lauter has attracted many visitors ever since. The first electric lighting was donated by refugees from the Rhineland, the statue of the Blessed Mother was donated by the main teacher Fr. Schneider. The grotto was further expanded between 1958 and 1962 under Pastor Adolf Schuchert. On September 23, 1962, a statue of St. Bernadette made of sandstone by the sculptor Johannes Kirsch, Petersberg, was inaugurated here (source: bad-salzschlirf.de/sehenswuerdigungen/mariengrotte-2/).

The Mariengrotte can be reached from below or you can park your car at the cemetery. The place is very quiet and enthusiastic.
