The history of the defense system is probably related to the conversion of Cappenberg Castle into a Premonstratensian monastery in 1122. Botzlar Castle was probably intended to serve as a new protective castle for the town of Selm. The castle was mentioned in 1282. The Lords of Meinhövel and von Velen are named as former owners.

The complex had several moats, the innermost of which were only filled in in the 1960s.

The castle and the surrounding areas had their own manorial court, which merged with the bishop's Gogericht in Werne in the 15th century.

Before the merger of the previous municipalities of Bork and Selm in 1975, consideration was given to naming the newly created municipality Botzlar. However, this plan was scrapped. The new community was named Selm.

This castle complex of Haus Botzlar in Selm-Beifang, built in the 12th century, used to consist of two islands connected by a bridge and protected by several rings of moats. On the front, larger island, the estate's farm buildings were located around a rectangular square. The dimensions can be guessed from the current building ensemble with the town house.
The main castle was on the rear, smaller island.
The current white building stands on the foundations of this earlier castle.
