Today's Adenauerplatz was created in 1872 as part of the expansion of the "Gründerzeitviertel". The original city plan of 1863 provided for a new marketplace. Since the creation of this plan had taken a long time for various reasons, the Gladbach business people had already created facts in which they built their businesses along the former Crefelder road (now Hindenburgstraße). This street proved to be attractive because it was not only one of the main streets, but also connected the 1850 opened station with the existing city.

The Kaiserplatz around 1930. The equestrian statue overlooks St. Albertus. On the right, half-hidden by the statue, is the workers' hospice.

Instead of shops, upscale townhouses have now been built around the square, which has been kept free of development, and this is finally laid out in a park-like manner. The Albertus Church, consecrated in 1885, and the adjoining workers' hospice and the Albertstift were added. On 18 July 1897 an equestrian statue of Kaiser Wilhelm I was unveiled in the square. During the Second World War, the statue was dismantled for melting.

At the corner of Albertusstraße / Kaiserstraße 1901 a new building for the Gladbacher business bank was built. In this building (today Albertusstraße 44a) moved in June 1938, the district leadership of the NSDAP for Gladbach - Rheydt. In September 1944, the building was destroyed in an air raid and served after the reconstruction in 1948 the city administration in changing function u. a. as a real estate office, as a cultural office and as a town center. In the meantime, the Kreiswehr replacement office was also housed here.

Built in 1901 for the Gladbacher commercial bank building Albertusstraße 44a around 1927.

On January 27, 1997, OB Feldhege unveiled a commemorative plaque for all Mönchengladbach victims of National Socialism. Another city building is located on Adenauerplatz: the city library. On March 17, 1926, the couple Reinhold and Paula Brandts donated the large property Kaiserstraße 47 to the city of Mönchengladbach under the condition of naming the original house after the father of Karl Brandt and "for dignified accommodation of the city library and for archival and museum purposes" use. This purpose fulfilled the house to the destruction in the Second World War. In 1959, the purpose of the foundation was changed slightly in order to construct today's city library (house address Blücherstraße 6) on the site, in whose premises the city archives were initially housed.

In the middle of the city a large green area with a couple of statues and the benches to take a break and enjoy the peace and quiet.
