Sovana lies on a tuff hill at the confluence of the Calesine and Folonia rivers. The complex of the place consists of three streets running lengthways, the Obere Straße, Untere Straße and Mittelstraße. Sovana gained importance as early as the Etruscan period. Important sights from this period have been preserved to this day. In the 11th century the city experienced another period of prosperity, while in the following centuries a process of decay began. Nevertheless, Sovana still has its original, medieval town center today. In 1833 only 64 people lived in the city, today about 150 people live in Sovana. Due to the rediscovery of the cultural treasures of Sovana in recent years, the place has returned to life after centuries of oblivion. Nevertheless, Sovana is not a tourist metropolis. Time really seems to have stood still here. You sit in front of the houses to chat, the cats roam the few alleys and souvenir shops are in vain.

The old town of Sovana, which is well worth seeing and is situated on a tufa ridge, can be explored in a pleasant way on this quiet street. At the eastern end at the entrance to the village are the ruins of Rocca Aldobrandesca, at the western end the cathedral; in between is the only square in the small town, the Piazza del Pretorio (district court square) with a small church and three small noble palaces. Nice restaurants line the way. For part of the way back from the cathedral, the southern route Via Rodolfo Siviero is ideal - past (sometimes overgrown) gardens and individual houses back to the village square.
