The old market together with the Kapuzinerplatz and the minster form the core of the historic Mönchengladbach. Here - almost at the gates of the abbey - a small settlement grew into a town and was finally enclosed by a city wall. The thick tower is one of the remains of this city wall. Remnants of this protective wall can also be found in the Geropark at the foot of the Abteiberg. The location of a historic city gate can be seen on Hindenburgstrasse at the level of the intersection "on the city wall" as a colored pavement.
