commissioned by Hermann Piecq, Emil Hollweg, born in 1882 in Fliethstraße in Mönchengladbach, created the statue in 1912 in front of the town hall. Before that, Hollweg, who had become self-employed after attending the Düsseldorf Art Academy, returned to Gladbach. Since 1908 he had in the Gladbach Lord Mayor a sponsor. In 1907, a model for a Balderich monument had already been made. In the following years, however, the city councils repeatedly disagreed to make the monument and set up. The issue was not so much the question of whether this monument should exist, but rather how the environment should be designed.

Balderich in the mid-20s.In the town council meeting on December 27, 1911 nails should finally be made with heads, especially as the completion of the new savings bank building was outlined and wanted to make the road from the market to the city hall finally complacent. In the assembly, however, the model broke up unhappily. Thus, only at the subsequent meeting on 3 January 1912, the statement was adopted, which took place in the same year.
