The mayor now has his official residence in the former abbot's residence on the abbey hill of Sankt Vitus in Mönchengladbach.

The present town hall of the city Mönchengladbach, the former abbot of the Benedictine abbey, was built in its present form with its striking baroque portal by Abbot Bruno Charmanns 1663. Under Abbot Petrus Knorr 1705 completed the completion of the south wing. Following the abolition of the abbey, the building served, among other things, as a cotton weaving mill. Since 1835, the former prelature building belongs to the former Benedictine abbey of the city of Mönchengladbach and functions as the town hall. The rich equipment of the representation rooms was lost during the heavy destruction of the years 1943 to 1944. However, the Baroque portals of the large courtyard remained preserved. After reconstruction, the building has served as the official residence of the Lord Mayor since 1950.
