Heidesee Bottrop

"The approximately 54-hectare Heidesee lake is located in the Kirchheller Heide in the north-west of Bottrop. It was created on a former gravel excavation area and consists of three bodies of water.
After the end of the excavation work, the area was designed for quiet natural recreation and partly in the sense of biotope and species protection.
The center of the area is the elongated lake with several islands on which natural development takes place. East of it are two smaller bodies of water, which are also developing in a natural way.
The underwater plant vegetation in the Heidesee is adapted to nutrient-poor conditions, including five species of stoneworts. Therefore, the nature reserve is of national importance. It is the largest body of water of this type in the Westphalian Bight. The Heidesee is an important part of "Natura 2000", the coherent European network of protected areas that is being created step by step. "
