Capital of Arab-Norman architecture and the most important city in Sicily, Palermo is the fifth most populous municipality in Italy. It boasts three famous markets (Vucciria, Ballarò, Capo), the splendid Zisa palace and the famous Teatro Massimo, among other things. Here you can discover truly unparalleled culinary traditions, tourist attractions, museums, churches and nature.

The city fascinates for its very happy position, the mildness of the climate and the beauty of the places. There are many testimonies of the culture of the conquerors: from the Romans to the Byzantines, from the Arabs to the Normans, from the Swabians to the French, from the Spaniards to the Austrians, they have left the unmistakable trace of their stay.
Almost always these are testimonies of extraordinary value, as the confluence of forms and styles, from Northern Europe to Africa, from the Middle Ages to the Baroque, has often given rise to extremely colorful artistic, architectural and decorative creations.
And this is the other peculiarity of Palermo: that, despite the mixture of cultures, the city has preserved the identity of a capital city, which in all times has been able to combine the best of other peoples with its own vocation for freedom.
Via Maqueda and Via Vittorio Emanuele. This point, the center of the city, is called the Quattro Canti because of the four rounded corners of the buildings that overlook it, decorated with fountains and statues.
A stone's throw from Via Maqueda is Piazza Pretoria, with the solemn Palazzo del Municipio, the Church of Santa Caterina and the monumental Praetorian Fountain. After passing through the nearby Piazza Bellini, the Church of the Martorana appears. Adjacent to this church is the 12th century Church of San Cataldo. It is dominated by three red domes reminiscent of Arab architecture. The interior is very impressive. Both of these churches constitute one of the most beautiful visions of Palermo.

Palermo is an extremely attractive city that you quickly become attached to as it is full of life. Its monuments are just exceptional. It is absolutely breathtakingly rich and diverse, having encompassed the influence of many peoples in its history. I recommend, among other things, the open-air markets in the small streets of the center, and a visit to the Palais Normand, also known as the Palais Royal, located on Independence Square. This stronghold was in turn Punic fortress, Roman fort, castle of the Arab emirs and residence of the Norman kings in the twelfth century, then finally seat of the Sicilian regional assembly.
