The artwork is part of the Beaufort 2021 art triennial along the Belgian coast. With this chameleon, Deller pays tribute to one of the oldest living creatures on earth, a distant descendant of the dinosaur family and an endangered species. Many people find chameleons ugly and are unfortunately unaware of the wonderful magic that these extraordinarily fascinating animals exude. Their rapidly changing color nuances are sometimes mistakenly seen as camouflage, in reality they express their inner state and invite them to communicate with their environment with this wonderful color palette.
This frivolous and fun artwork is expressly intended as a play device for the young. Precisely because the chameleon's tongue has been transformed into a slide, it invites children to explore the hollow belly and eventually slide out through the mouth.
