The town church was built in 1350 as a monastery church for the Dominican monastery, church patron saint was Mary, the mother of Jesus Christ. After the introduction of the Reformation in the Landgraviate of Hesse in 1526 after the Homberg Synod, the monastery was dissolved. In 1531, Landgrave Philipp gave the town permission to use the former Dominican church instead of the dilapidated old town parish church of St. Martin (today's Church of the Dead). The first evangelical pastor was Nikolaus Ulner, who already preached evangelically in 1523. In the 19th century, Franz von Roques was the parish priest in Treysa.
