Legend has it that this is where Sir Francis Drake received news of the Spanish Armada on its way to invade. He was playing bowls at the time and supposedly calmly carried on playing. A statue of Drake stands on the hoe.

Up here you can also see the iconic Smeaton Tower, a classic red and white lighthouse. It was originally built on Eddystone Reef but moved brick by brick to the Hoe due to the reef being too unstable to support the building.

During summer months you could interrupt your run with a dip at the Tinside Lido. Built in 1935 it is one of the top 10 lidos in Europe.
