Cornwerd is a beautiful idyllic small Frisian village with only 80 inhabitants. Here in Cornwerd, but actually all over Friesland, everyone always says "hi" to each other. Whether you know each other or not. So don't be surprised if everyone suddenly greets you. You can also say hi when you leave Friesland.

The village was first mentioned in the 9th century as Quirnifurt, meaning "terp with windmill". Cornwerd used to be more important than neighboring Makkum because it was on the only navigable canal and a defensive sconce was built near the village. In 1345 the army of Holland was defeated and for a while the merchants from Holland were only allowed to trade in Harich, Cornwerd and Holwerd.

The Dutch Reformed Church dates from the 13th century. In 1898 the small gable roof was replaced by a large tower. The Cornwerdermolen polder mill was built in 1907. It was devastated by a hurricane in 1972, and an engine was installed. In 1999 it was restored.
