“That's why it's not just about the migrants' cause, it's not just about them, but about all of us, about the present and the future of the human family. Migrants, especially the most vulnerable, help us to recognize the 'signs of the times'."

    POPE FRANCIS

Regarding this monument – some may find the term memorial more appropriate – the following text from the Archdiocese of Vienna's website:
"Pope Francis unveiled a sculpture of a migrant ship in St. Peter's Square at the end of a service for World Migrant Day on Sunday, September 29, 2019. The bronze and clay work by Canadian artist Timothy Schmalz depicts a ship carrying 140 migrants from different countries of origin and eras. The sculpture is titled "Angels Unaware."
The title of the artwork refers to a phrase in the Letter to the Hebrews from the New Testament. It states: "Do not forget to offer hospitality, for through it some have unknowingly entertained angels!" He chose this sculpture for St. Peter's Square so that it "will always remind us of the challenges of hospitality from the Gospel," Francis stated..."
