Of the countless city pumps that Culemborg once had, four monumental pumps have been preserved: two on the Markt, one on the Varkensmarkt and one on Zandstraat. It is no coincidence that all the pumps are located on the old 'front street', as this central, through main axis is also called. The winding route of this axis follows the old course of the river de Meer, which apparently still carried plenty of water deep in the subsurface even after it was filled in.
