The Alsterwanderweg is scenic and leads through the Alster Valley. There are many small branches from the main path that are interesting for mountain bikers.

The Alstertal connects the four Hamburg districts of Hummelsbüttel, Poppenbüttel, Sasel, and Wellingsbüttel, which are located on the Alster. The protected valley of the Alster extends far beyond the borders of Hamburg in the north. The Alster spring is located about 25 kilometers north of Hamburg in Henstedt-Ulzburg in the district of Rhen in Schleswig-Holstein. In the nature reserves around the headwaters of the Alster in the northern and eastern Hamburg area, there are various protected animal and plant species, including rare orchids and mushrooms.

The well signposted Alster hiking trail stretches along the river from Kayhude in Schleswig-Holstein to Hamburg's Inner Alster.
