The Abbegraben is a moat created in 1827 southeast of Torfhaus. It was used to supply the mines of the BurgstÀtter Zug around Clausthal with drive water for the water wheels there. The ditch taps the water of the Abbe, which rises in the water-rich Brockenfeld - a swampy area southwest of the Brocken. The total length of the Abbegraben is 1,540 meters.

The Upper Harz water management, together with the Rammelsberg mine and the historic town center of Goslar, has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2010.
The Upper Harz water management was created from the 16th to the 19th century and is a sophisticated system of ditches, watercourses and ponds. The aim was to dam the existing water and direct it to the numerous mines in a targeted manner. There the water drove the water wheels into the tunnels.
This system is still being cultivated today in order to preserve the associated cultural landscape in the Upper Harz. Other aspects are nature conservation and tourism.
