The Jewish cemetery in Rotenburg was probably laid out in the 17th century (first evidence of lease payments by the Jewish community is from 1682); the oldest found tombstones are from 1734. The cemetery originally served the Jewish communities of Bebra, Baumbach, Lispenhausen, Ronshausen, Iba and Braach as well as Breitenbach as a burial place until some of these places established their own cemeteries. According to documentation from 1937, the older part of the cemetery had 190 gravestones, the new part 155 gravestones. The last burials took place in 1937/38.

    Hiking

In November 2022, a display case with explanations of the "Jewish Cemetery" cultural monument was set up at the intersection of several hiking trails, and it also provides information about Jewish life in Rotenburg and the surrounding area. The display board was financed from the 2022 regional budget of the Hersfeld-Rotenburg Regional Forum and the “Jewish Museum Rotenburg” support group. The cemetery on the Hausberg, which has been documented since 1682, is one of the oldest Jewish burial sites in Hesse.
