THE TUNNEL
In July 1891, the future tunnel under the castle was traced. This 90m long passage corresponded to the development project of the railway network of 1890. It made the city center of Bouillon more accessible. The intention was to connect the city with France (Sedan) via the village of Corbion. The building permit to build the route to Sugny and the tunnel was given by a royal decree in 1894. The drilling was completed on June 27, 1896. On May 28, 1897, the first stone was laid. It was not until thirteen years later, on September 11, 1910, that the tunnel was officially inaugurated. The railway became known as « Le Bouillonnais ». It facilitated the cross-border exchanges that were otherwise carried out by a PO box. The three municipalities financed the construction. Their names are carved above the entrance to the tunnel.
