    Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best way to check military firing times for West Mill Tor?

As West Mill Tor is located within the active Okehampton Firing Range, checking military firing times is crucial before your visit. You can find up-to-date schedules on the official Dartmoor National Park website or the Ministry of Defence (MOD) website. Red flags displayed on the moor indicate live firing exercises, and access to certain areas will be restricted for safety.

Is West Mill Tor suitable for beginner hikers or families with young children?

West Mill Tor is generally considered an intermediate hike due to its steep-sided terrain and the challenging granite 'clitter' (boulder field) on its eastern side. While determined beginners might manage, it's not typically recommended as a first hike. For families with young children, routes approaching from the south might be less strenuous, but overall, the terrain requires good footwear and a reasonable level of fitness. There are more gentle walks available elsewhere on Dartmoor if you're looking for easier options.

Are there specific parking areas for accessing West Mill Tor?

Yes, several parking options provide access to West Mill Tor. Popular starting points include the car park at Meldon Reservoir, areas near Okehampton Camp, or from Belstone village. Parking can fill up quickly, especially during peak season or on weekends, so arriving earlier in the day is advisable to secure a spot.

Can I bring my dog to West Mill Tor, and are there any specific rules?

Dogs are generally welcome on Dartmoor, including around West Mill Tor. However, it's essential to keep them under close control, preferably on a lead, especially during lambing season (March-July) or when livestock (sheep, cattle, ponies) are present. The area is also an active military training ground, so dogs should be kept on leads near military installations or during exercises. Always clean up after your dog.

What are the public transport options for reaching West Mill Tor?

Public transport to the immediate vicinity of West Mill Tor is limited. The nearest town with regular bus services is Okehampton. From Okehampton, you would typically need to walk several miles or arrange for a taxi to reach common starting points like Meldon Reservoir or Okehampton Camp. Planning your journey in advance is recommended, as services can be infrequent.

Are there any cafes, pubs, or accommodation options near West Mill Tor?

West Mill Tor itself is in a remote part of Dartmoor, so there are no amenities directly at the tor. However, the nearby town of Okehampton offers a good selection of cafes, pubs, and various accommodation options, including B&Bs and hotels. The villages of Belstone and South Zeal also have traditional pubs that serve food and sometimes offer accommodation, providing a convenient base for exploring the area.

Is wild camping permitted at West Mill Tor?

Wild camping is permitted on Dartmoor in designated areas, which includes much of the high moorland around West Mill Tor. However, specific rules apply: you must follow the 'Dartmoor National Park Authority's Wild Camping Code', which includes leaving no trace, camping away from roads and settlements, and not lighting fires. Always check the latest guidelines on the Dartmoor National Park website before planning a wild camp, especially regarding military firing times which can restrict access.

What unique historical features can be found around West Mill Tor?

Beyond its natural granite formations, West Mill Tor holds intriguing historical elements. You can find evidence of its military past, such as target tramways on its north-west slope. There are also less-known features like a ruined hut, possibly a tinners' hut, and a line of small standing stones whose origins are debated between prehistoric use and military markers. These add an extra layer of discovery to your hike.

How does the difficulty of West Mill Tor compare to Yes Tor or High Willhays?

While West Mill Tor is a challenging intermediate hike, Yes Tor and High Willhays are higher and often involve longer, more exposed routes, especially when approached from certain directions. West Mill Tor offers a good workout with its steep ascents and boulder fields, but it can be a less demanding objective than tackling the highest points of Dartmoor, making it a rewarding alternative or a great warm-up for its taller neighbours.

What should I pack for an intermediate hike to West Mill Tor?

For an intermediate hike to West Mill Tor, essential packing includes sturdy hiking boots with good ankle support, waterproof and windproof outer layers (as weather can change rapidly on Dartmoor), sufficient water and snacks, a map and compass (or GPS device), a first-aid kit, and sun protection. Even on a clear day, the exposed moorland can be chilly and windy. Always check the weather forecast before you set out.

Are there any circular routes that include West Mill Tor?

Yes, many hikers incorporate West Mill Tor into longer circular routes that often include other prominent tors like Yes Tor and High Willhays. Depending on your starting point (e.g., Meldon Reservoir or Okehampton Camp), you can plan a loop that takes in West Mill Tor, offering varied terrain and expansive views. Numerous route suggestions can be found on hiking platforms, allowing you to tailor the length and difficulty to your preference.
