The current tower was built in 1525. Its predecessor was a smaller tower between the nave and the choir. In 1550 the wooden beamed ceiling was replaced by a vault. Tower and chancel have six-part star vaults, the nave cross vaults.

The church was built from the late 14th century to the mid-15th century. It originally had a transept built in 1550, the southern arm of which was demolished before 1813. The sacristy is attached to the north of the chancel of the church next to the preserved north arm of the cross.

The tower is Denmark's largest village church tower. It is 28 meters high, 12 × 10 meters wide and has walls two meters thick. It was probably also built for use as a defense tower. On all sides of the tower there are small round-arched openings for use as loopholes and downward holes through which e.g. B. stones could be thrown down. Inside, traces of the original furnishings can be seen (fireplace, stone bench, door, etc.). In contrast to the other churches on the island, the tower has an east and west gable designed as a stepped gable - and no north and south gable.
