The church is accessible during the day outside of church services up to the foyer. As the main work of Gottfried Bandhauer, the Church of St. Maria is one of the most important sacred buildings of classicism in Germany. The church was built as a castle and parish church and as a burial place for the ducal couple, whose bones also rest in the crypt.
In the parish of "St. Maria, Köthen", which was newly built on May 2nd, 2010, the castle and parish church of St. Maria Himmelfahrt is the main church.
