The streamlet flows over basaltic lava rocks formed from a 200 thousand year old lava flow.

With the eruption of the Bellerberg volcano 200,000 years ago, the outflowing basalt lava formed the Ettringer Bellersberg and the Kottenheimer Büden, which are around 200 meters high.

The escaping lava poured out in three lava flows, the northeast-flowing Kottenheimer Winfeld lava flow, the northwest-flowing Ettringer lava flow and the south-flowing Mayen lava flow.
Basalt walls up to 40 meters high formed from the solidified lava.
Basalt lava was mined in the communities of Mayen and Mendig until the middle of the 20th century.
The first mining took place 7000 years ago as millstone mining.
