On Saturday 30 July 2005, His Holiness the Dalai Lama on his second visit inaugurated the monument of the Lhasa Bell to commemorate the great Capuchin missionary Fra ’Orazio da Pennabilli. The bell is an exact copy of the one found in the convent of the Capuchin friars built in Lhasa in Tibet when Fra 'Orazio was prefect of the mission. Currently, the original bell is located in a warehouse in the Jokhang, the main Buddhist temple in Lhasa, and is the only relic left in Tibet as evidence of the 18th century Christian mission. The cast for the casting of the bell was made by Elio Marini during a study expedition in the summer of 2004. On the monument, next to the bell, as a sign of encounter between religions for peace and harmony between men, Three "mani korlo" or Tibetan prayer mills have been placed, on which the Buddhist mantra Om mani padme hum is engraved. Prayer mills are found around all temples in Tibet. The gesture of making them rotate is equivalent to addressing a prayer to the sky, like the sound of the bell.
