A detour here is definitely worth it. Stift Melk from the 11th century AD on the hill with collegiate church and a beautiful park invites you to linger. Likewise the street cafes on the Wiener Strasse.

The Lower Austrian town of Melk lies on the right bank of the Danube and, looking east, is known as "the gateway to the Wachau." Parts of the town, such as Melk Abbey, are part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site of the Wachau. Melk is the district capital of the district of the same name.

You'll definitely pass through here if you're cycling along the Danube Cycle Path. It's highly recommended to plan an overnight stay!

A detour to Melk by bike is worthwhile in many respects. The town lies directly on the Danube Cycle Path and is an ideal stopover on the Wachau Valley leg of your journey. Visible from afar, the imposing Melk Abbey rises high above the Danube and is one of the most important Baroque buildings in Europe. From the cycle path, a short but gently rising path leads up to the old town, where you can stroll through historic alleyways lined with cozy cafes and small shops.
