The “Rheinische Esel” is a popular railway cycle path in the Ruhr area that runs between Dortmund, Witten and Bochum. The original railway line opened in 1880 and served primarily freight traffic as well as workers and market women who used the line to reach their jobs and markets. The unusual name of the route is said to come from the market women, who were often laden with heavy loads, similar to loaded donkeys.

The railway line played an important role in the industrial development of the region as it served important commercial customers such as the Gottessegen mine, various mines in Annen, Dynamit Nobel and Wittener Stahlrohren-Werke AG. In 1979, passenger traffic on this route was discontinued and the eastern section was closed and dismantled until 1982. Freight traffic was gradually reduced until 2004 and the route was then dismantled.

In the 1980s, the conversion of the eastern part of the route into a railway cycle path began, and in 2012 the western part was also converted into a cycle and hiking path. The cycle path stretches over 12 kilometers and connects the RuhrtalRadweg in the south with the central Ruhr area. The western part of the cycle path is asphalted, while the eastern part has a water-bound surface. The cycle path offers a gradient-free crossing of the Ardey Mountains and leads through scenic areas. It is an important testimony to the region's industrial change and an example of the successful conversion of disused railway lines for recreational purposes.
