In the extreme northwest of Hanover is on the edge of Hinüberschen landscape park on a today no longer recognizable leash island, the former Augustinian nunnery Marienwerder, Monasterium Sanktae Mariae in Werdere. It was founded in 1196 by Count Konrad I von Roden at the place where according to the legend a miraculous image of Mary was washed ashore. In 1216 the monastery was occupied by Augustinian nuns from Obernkirchen.
The monastery burnt down in 1335 almost completely, but was rebuilt until 1338. The present-day convent buildings were built between 1688 (single-storey south and west wing in half-timbered) and 1724 (two-storey angled solid east wing). A cellar vault below the south wing forms the remainder of the medieval monastery complex. At the beginning of the 19th century, the monastery was secularized. Today it is a lady's pen and nursing home.
The Klosterkirche, which dates back to around 1200, is the oldest church building in the city of Hanover and is a basilica-style building made of rough-plastered quarry stone on a cross-shaped ground plan. The church was restored around 1860 outside and inside.

Since the Reformation in 1542 Monastery Marienwerder is Protestant. It has the status of a Protestant lady's pin since 1620. Today lives in the monastery, a Protestant women's convent, which cares for a residential and care center and does cultural work.
The monastery is part of the General Hannoversche Klosterfonds, a public foundation with ecclesiastical, social and cultural purpose. Marienwerder is one of the 5 Calenberg monasteries - Barsinghausen, Marienwerder, Wennigsen, Mariensee and Wülfinghausen.

Due to extensive construction work in the monastery Marienwerder no guided tours can currently be offered. For church tours, please contact the Ev.-luth. Parish of Marienwerder.

I filmed the monastery church with the Hinüberschen garden with a drone and published it on YouTube.
