Gattara was already known starting from the second Iron Age, between the 6th and 4th centuries BC. There are numerous finds from the Roman era which attest to the presence of some farms in the localities of Pierozzi and Lake Gattara. The first news of the castle of Gattara dates back to 1145. This is followed by a document from 1209, with which we learn that the castle of Gattara was given as a concession by the Papal State to the family of the counts of Carpegna upon payment of a rent.
