Baalberg and Baalbos have been known for a long time by the local residents of "Looi". Even though the piece of nature was mainly in private hands, there was already quite a bit of walking and mountain biking. It is also ideally situated for walks to all the nature in and around Tessenderlo (with Gerhagen as the best known but certainly not the only one). The area and the immediate surroundings are also worth it. Baalbos was recently acquired by Natuurpunt and is therefore an additional asset for the region. It is close to the center and is easily accessible via Groenpoort.

In the nature reserve you will also find the Chapel of Our Lady of the Seven Beeches komoot.nl/highlight/5340089

The municipality of Tessenderlo and Groene Wegen vzw have included the nature reserve in the first of five slow road walks in Tessenderlo Centrum, as announced in December 2022. A report of this with more information about the area and places of interest on komoot.nl/tour /994839493

Baalberg is also known locally as the chestnut forest and the forest of Sus Vergif. You can now read more about it on the Natuurpunt Tessenderlo website. For example, the small area (17 hectares) is apparently a so-called Ferraris forest, a forest that has been effectively forested non-stop since the Ferraris atlas was drawn up and that is not uncommon in Flanders. The forest is located on an iron sandstone hill and consists mainly of old oaks and beech trees. You can also read that endangered plants such as Dark-spored Forest Violet, Saw Leaf and Mountain Deer still have a place there and that the rare Emperor's Mantle (butterfly species), the Black Woodpecker, the Viviparous Lizard and the Firefly (glow worm) have a living space there.
