Of all the known Viking castles in Denmark, Aggersborg is undoubtedly the largest. It was built around the year 980 by Harald Blåtand in this strategically favorable place. Here one could control seafaring from East and West as well as ships to and from Norway.

At the same time, one had an overview of the merchant ships and barges that operated between Han Herred and Vesthimmerland - an important trading center at the time.

The castle complex has a diameter of 240 m and a ring wall with a length of 840 m. Inside the wall there were 48 long houses. A total of 5000 people could live here.

In 1993, the Han Herred Skov District and Ministry of the Environment began rebuilding the 11 m wide and 4 m high ring wall. There is also a small information booth where you can learn more about the Viking castle and the finds that were made here during excavations.

Since the summer of 2017 there has been a new and long-awaited form of information transfer - it takes the visitor on a journey through time. An app that illustrates how you imagine Aggersborg in the days of Harald Blåtand. Available for IOs and Android.

Aggersborg is Denmark's largest Viking castle. It is located in Nordjylland on Aggersund north of the Limfjord and was archaeologically explored between 1945 and 1948.
The castle complex has an inner diameter of 240 meters and an outer diameter of 288 meters. There is a flat area of 8 meters between the wall and the ditch. The ditch was about 1.30 meters deep, the wall about 4 meters high.
