"The castle was built from 1228 to 1231 during the time of Count Volkwin III. The town of Schwalenberg was also founded around this time. The castle was pledged to various noble families in the 15th century and was later the seat of various side lines of the House of Lippe. Between 1938 and 1945 the castle was used as a convalescent home for mothers and then as a Protestant children's convalescent home until 1962. The building was subsequently renovated and converted into a hotel.
