This square was built around the year 1300 and became the center of Hasselt. The streets leading to the four city gates gathered here. Originally known as Op den marct, it also received names such as Graenmarct and Coorenmerct, eventually becoming called Grote Markt via the market.

Until the 18th century, the city administration of Hasselts was based in the Lakenhalle on the Grote Markt. The Perroen used to stand on the square and there were also two fountains. The city administration and the Perroen were moved to the Groenplein.

The somewhat irregularly shaped square is surrounded by town houses. Some have an old core that can date back to the 15th century. Many houses today have a neoclassical facade.
