Best Hikes to Lønne Church and Old Cemetery

Tips

  • Lønne Church was consecrated in 1904. It replaced a medieval church. At the end of the 19th century it had become so dilapidated that it was decided to demolish it. In the years 1600-1700 Lønne parish was deserted by shifting sands and floods. The old church was built of stones from the seashore and a few pieces of tuff and granite. Their location is marked on the old cemetery. You can find this place by walking about 200 meters south from the current church. The granite blocks and tufa stones from the old church were reused in the new building. The current altarpiece consists of parts of the late Gothic winged altar from the old church from around 1475. The front of the altar table is a Renaissance carving from 1630. The pulpit dates from 1582 and bears the initials of Jens Hansen Rusk, the pastor at the time. He was accused of sorcery and burned at the stake in 1611. The church can be visited through a latticed door.

Between Lønne Kirke and Gamle Skole lies Gamle Kirkegård. Old, weathered tombstones and crosses bear witness to long-forgotten times.
