High water mark at Birkahof
On the morning of September 25, 1927, heavy rain caused the Rhine to swell enormously. Washed up wood accumulated at the railway bridge in Schaan, which was too low. The water rose and finally washed away the Rhine embankment above the bridge.
The plaque marks the water level at that time. The whole plain from Schaan to Tosters and Bangs in Vorarlberg was flooded. Houses, roads and crops fell victim to the water masses. Two people drowned, Ruggell and parts of Gamprin and Bendern had to be evacuated. The damage amounted to around 10 million Swiss francs. The solidarity of the surrounding countries was great. Soldiers from Switzerland and Austria and hundreds of volunteers from twenty countries rushed to help. The broken Rhine dam could not be closed again until three months later.
