Towards the end of the Middle Ages, the Zwin and Zwarte Gat estuaries fell more and more to silt. This made it increasingly difficult for ships to reach the wealthy commercial city of Bruges. In the years 1501-1505, therefore, a canal was dug between the Zwin and the Braakman: the Brugse Vaart. This new waterway intersected part of the old town of Oostburg. Three quarters of a century later, this passage began to gradually dissipate. Today's Groote Gat is a remnant of this ancient waterway.
