The Riedlewald is the green lung of the city. For many schools and kindergartens in its vicinity, it is a place of nature education and a regular destination for the Green Classroom.
In 1862, Karl and Olga, at that time still the crown prince couple, acquired the Riedlewald forest north of the city in order to have it "converted into a park" and "to open its promenades to the public in thankful munificence". After the death of Queen Olga in 1892, the city acquired the park.
