Today's pilgrimage church goes back to the knights of Limpach, whose ancestral seat was on the Benistobel; In 1170 an Albert von Limpach is explicitly mentioned in old chronicles. They converted the old fortified tower into a church tower and built a palace chapel. The chapel was dedicated to St. George. When today's pilgrimage and parish church was built as a result of the expansion, Georgi was taken over as a patron saint. The place Limpach is mentioned in a document from 1226. In 1275, Limpach appears expressly as a parish, which owns two relics of St. George. His Holiness Pope Clement XI. gave the pilgrimage church of St. George the great indulgence, so that everyone who comes with a humble heart and brings their concerns and worries returns with an indulgence (Georgi Büchlein 1722). In 1702, H.H. Pastor Sartori founded and brought into being the Brotherhood of St. George, to which every inhabitant of Limpach belongs to this day. An old prayer book from 1722 shows that many pilgrims came to Limpach on foot or on horseback very early on to entrust their needs and worries to St. George. St. George is one of the 14 Holy Helpers and is the patron saint of knights, farmers, horses and cattle, hikers, hospitals and boy scouts. There were often, it is said, two to three thousand pilgrims there, and that many votive offerings in wax and paintings expressed thanks to St. George. Unfortunately, none of these votive offerings have survived today. Much was lost during various renovation and refurbishment works, but also through ignorance. Nevertheless, the veneration of St. George lives on among the people of Limpach, but also beyond the parish and the Deggenhausertal. The patron saint is celebrated on April 23rd and especially on the second Sunday in May (Mother's Day), when hundreds of riders and pilgrims come from near and far to take part in the traditional St. George's Ride. With the help of many music bands, something of the ancient pilgrimage comes alive, even in our time.
