Grasmere is an idyllic village nestled in the Romantic heart of Lakeand. It was famously the home of nature poet William Wordsworth, one of the leading exponents of the the Romantic era. The movement had a profound effect on the way people viewed and appreciated upland landscapes like the Lake District.

Today, Grasmere is popular with day trippers and hikers. There are many gift shops, eateries and places to stay, while you can also visit Dove Cottage, where Wordsworth and his sister Dorothy lived between 1799 and 1808.

Hikes to some of the national park's most beloved small fells begin in Grasmere, such as Helm Crag and Loughrigg Fell. For a longer outing, there's also the Fairfield Horseshoe, which takes in no less than eight Wainwright summits.
